Reports & Articles

Clients often ask us what studies or articles we recommend to give to neighbors, family, teachers, or friends to help them understand the health effects of EMFs, especially radio frequency radiation. Here are some of our favorites:

Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity: A Summary by Dr. Erica Mallery-Blythe — December 2014
This is the best resource we have found on electrical sensitivity. It is a 78-page report, including over 200 references. The findings are summarized in the first four pages. As an example of material presented, data suggests that 50% of the population may be affected by 2017.

BioInitiative Report: 2012 Summary for the Public
The BioInitiative Report is the only comprehensive, fully independent (no industry involvement) review of all the EMF studies to date. It was first published in 2007 and included a review of about 2,000 studies, then updated in 2012 to include 1,800 more studies. This report was produced by some of the world’s leading EMF experts, including scientists and doctors, as well as public policy experts. The full report is over 500 pages, but the Summary for the Public is only 18 pages. The table of contents provides a good preview of the information contained in the report:

• Evidence for Damage to Sperm and Reproduction
• Evidence that Children are More Vulnerable
• Evidence for Fetal and Neonatal Effects
• Evidence for Effects on Autism (Autism Spectrum Disorders)
• Evidence for Electrohypersensitivity
• Evidence for Effects from Cell Tower-Level RFR Exposures
• Evidence for Effects on the Blood-brain Barrier
• Evidence for Effects on Brain Tumors
• Evidence for Effects on Genes (Genotoxicity)
• Evidence for Effects on the Nervous System (Neurotoxicity)
• Evidence for Effects on Cancer (Childhood Leukemia, Adult Cancers)
• Melatonin, Breast Cancer and Alzheimer’s Disease
• Stress, Stress Proteins and DNA as a Fractal Antenna

BioInitiative Report: Reported Biological Effect from Radiofrequency Radiation at Low Intensity Exposure
This chart provides a good visual representation of the health effects from very low levels of exposure to radio frequency. These effects include disrupted immune system, reproductive effects, brain tumors, other cancers, blood-brain barrier, DNA damage, sleep, learning, memory, behavior, cardiac, blood pressure, stress proteins, and disrupted calcium metabolism. The effects are in order of exposure—lowest exposures first.

To understand what these numbers mean in relative terms, the studies in this report begin with exposures that are less than .0005 uW/cm2 (microwatts per centimeter squared).

The allowed limit in some other countries, for example, China, Italy and Russia, is 10 uW/cm2. However, the allowed limit in the U.S. for most cellular services is 1,000 uW/cm2. This is based on old science from the 1980s when it was believed that the only harm that could come from radio frequency radiation was thermal, i.e. its heating effects.

American Academy of Environmental Medicine (AAEM):  Wireless Smart Meter Case Studies October 23, 2013
The AAEM calls for a moratorium on smart meters and implementation of safer technology. According to the AAEM, the 92 case series by Dr. Federica Lamech is well documented and scientifically valid. It clearly demonstrates adverse health effects from smart meter emissions.

As the document further states, “The peer reviewed, scientific literature demonstrates the correlation between EMF/RF exposure and neurological, cardiac, and pulmonary disease as well as reproductive disorders, immune dysfunction, cancer and other health conditions. The evidence is irrefutable.”

Dr. Martha Herbert, Pediatric Neurologist, Harvard Medical School: Letter to L.A. Unified School District About Wireless vs. Wired in the Classrooms
Dr. Herbert is an expert on autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and wrote the chapter in the BioInitiative Report on Evidence of Effects on Autism. As Dr. Herbert states in a letter dated February 9, 2013:
“There are thousands of papers that have accumulated over decades…. that document adverse health and neurological impacts of EMF/RFR. Children are more vulnerable than adults, and children with chronic illnesses and/or neurodevelopmental disabilities are even more vulnerable.”
“EMF/RFR from Wi-Fi and cell towers can exert a disorganizing effect on the ability to learn and remember, and can also be destabilizing to immune and metabolic function. This will make it harder for some children to learn, particularly those who are already having problems in the first place.
“Powerful industrial entities have a vested interest in leading the public to believe that EMF/RFR, which we cannot see, taste or touch, is harmless, but this is not true.”

American Academy of Environmental Medicine (AAEM): Wireless Radio Frequency Radiation in Schools – November 14, 2013
“The AAEM strongly supports the use of wired Internet connections, and encourages avoidance of radio frequency such as from WiFi, cellular and mobile phones and towers, and ‘smart meters’. “There is consistent, emerging science that shows people, especially children who are more vulnerable due to developing brains and thinner skulls, are being affected by the increasing exposure to wireless radiation. “To install WiFi in schools plus public spaces risks a widespread public health hazard that the medical system is not yet prepared to address. Statistics show that you can expect to see an immediate reaction in 3% and delayed effects in 30% of citizens of all ages.”
